Development and Peace is democratic movement for international solidarity that supports partners in the Global South in the pursuit of alternatives to unjust social, political, economic and environmental issues. This is accomplished through education and the call to action. Our group at Holy Redeemer seeks to bring about both this education and action.
Development and Peace is delighted to kickstart People and Planet First, its new annual campaign inspired by Pope Francis’s message of integral ecology.
Speaking up for rights and protesting injustices are powers that we take for granted in Canada. In parts of the Global South, however, this can be dangerous. Communities are often threatened and criminalized for defending their rights to healthy land, air and water.
The world leaders who will make critical environment-related decisions at the upcoming G20 and COP26 summits are often far removed from the marginalized peoples whose lives will be most affected by their decisions. It is therefore crucial to amplify the voices of our sisters and brothers who are fighting to protect our common home.
This is a Catholic imperative because, as Pope Francis writes, “[A] true ecological approach always becomes a social approach; it must integrate questions of justice in debates on the environment, so as to hear both the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor” (Laudato Si', 49).
